Cutting the grass is just a chore for most of us. It's not usually the first choice of activities for people to spend time on. For our elderly neighbors, it may be something they are no longer physically able to do. The grass doesn't care if you are no longer able to get outside and mow, it will continue to grow.
The unsightly lawn becomes more of a problem when the city starts to issue fines because of the code violation. Many of the elderly residents of area cities live on a fixed income. While they are no longer physically able to get out and cut the grass, they also don't have the means to pay someone to maintain their lawn. Some have also started receiving fines from the city.
One of the first issues area city officials asked the founders of Mercy Cares about was helping elderly citizens on fixed incomes with addressing code violations. Many times it is as simple as cutting the overgrown grass.
